During the concert held on Friday 26th May 2023 at 7 p.m. at the Lentz Villa, accordionist João Barradas and the Baltic Neopolis Orchestra under the baton of Emanuel Salvador will take our audience for a musical journey to Portugal.
The programme includes pieces by the Portuguese composers Joly Braga Santos and Luís Tinoco. Another interesting point of the programme is the presentation of João Barradas’ arrangement for accordion and string orchestra of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Concerto No. 4 in A Major, BWV 1055, originally written for harpsichord and string orchestra.

JOÃO BARRADAS

An accordionist working in the fields of classical music and jazz; winner of such prestigious international competitions as, among others, the World Accordion Trophy (CMA), the Coupe Mondiale of Accordion (CIA), the International Castelfidardo Contest, and the Okud Istra International Competition. His performances have been acclaimed in some of the most prestigious concert halls and events such as the Wiener Konzerthaus, Tonhalle MAAG Zürich, Sage Gasteshead, Festival d'Aix-en Provence, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Culturgest, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Philharmonics in Cologne and Luxembourg, Casa da Música Porto, Bozar Brussels, Philharmonie de Paris, L'Auditori Barcelona, Mupa Budapest, La Monnaie, Stuttgart Opera House, Sadlers's Wells Theatre in London, Onassis Cultural Centre in Athens, L'Arsenal Metz, Sava Center Belgrade, Centro Cultural de Belém, and the Tribeca Performing Arts Centre in New York.

His album with the New York label Inner Circle Music, Directions, was listed among Downbeat magazine’s Best Albums of the Year. As an outstanding improviser, Barradas has collaborated with numerous renowned musicians such as Florian Arbenz, Francesco Cafiso, Fabrizio Cassol, Wayne Escoffery, Peter Evans, Fabian Fiorini, Stephanne Galland, Ben Van Gelder, Gil Goldstein, Philip Harper, Michel Hatzigeorgiou, Jerome Jennings, Federico Malaman, Aka Moon, Miles Okasaki, Greg Osby, Tineke Postma, Rufus Reid, Jacob Sacks, Mike Stern. and Mark Turner.

João Barradas was nominated by the European Concert Hall Organization for the ECHO Rising Star 2019/2020. BBC Music Magazine nominated the accordionist as one of the current year’s classical music rising stars.

BALTIC NEOPOLIS ORCHESTRA

The orchestra has won widespread audience and critical acclaim, performing in most European countries as well as Cambodia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore. The orchestra’s large discography includes Marek Jasiński’s Ego Sapientia (2013), Górecki, Łukaszewski (2013), The Music of Szczecin, featuring works by Piotr Klimek, Michał Dobrzyński, Zbigniew Bagiński, and Janusz Stalmierski (2013), Tribute to Carl Loewe (2014), Sonatina für Alina (2014), Il Tramonto (2015), 4 AM Tango (2019), and Paweł Łukaszewski’s Musica Sacra 5 (2014). For that last album the orchestra received the Fryderyk Award in the category of chamber music.

EMANUEL SALVADOR

Emanuel Salvador was listed by The Strad magazine as one of the best Portuguese violinists of the young generation. As a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestra leader he has appeared in China, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and Turkey, among others. He has won prizes in such competitions as the Isolde Menges (RCM), Beckenham Festival, Barbirolli Memorial, Wolfson Foundation, Jovens Musicos, and Julio Cardona.

Salvador graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Royal College of Music in London. He has performed with such orchestras as the Orquesta Nacional de Espana, Brasil National Orchestra, Seoul Classical Players, Adana Philharmonic, Monterrey Symphony Orchestra, Krasnoyarsk Symphony, Orquestra de Norte, and Classica da Madeira. In Portugal he is the founder and leader of the Guimarães String Quartet, with which he regularly gives concerts in Europe and Asia. From 2005 to 2015, he was the leader of the Portuguese Qrquestra do Norte.

His successes include critically acclaimed albums, masterclasses conducted worldwide, as well as numerous concert tours in Southeast Asia, China, Japan, and the United States.
