Villa Italia. Vivaldi Night in the Lentz Villa’s Garden
24-06-2023, Saturday, at 9:00 pm
We invite you to spend a charming evening with the music of Antonio Vivaldi in the Lentz Villa’s garden (84 Wojska Polskiego Ave.) The event starts on Saturday 24th June 2023 at 9 p.m.
The Italian violin virtuoso was nicknamed ‘il Prete Rosso’ (‘the red priest’) due to his copper-coloured hair. His extraordinary musical settings attracted crowds to church services. He is rumoured frequently to have interrupted the Holy Masses he celebrated simply in order to write down a musical theme that had just come to his mind. Apart from his famous Four Seasons, he composed around eight hundred works, of which only a small proportion will be presented during our summer concert.
The star headlining the evening’s programme is the Greek countertenor Nicholas Spanos – an excellent singer who has performed. among others, at the Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper), Greek National Opera in Athens, Opéra national de Lorraine, Opera of Egypt, with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra (DR Koncerthuset), Camerata Stuttgart, Venice Baroque Orchestra, Les Talens Lyriques, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Orchester 1756 Salzburg, the Athens and Thessaloniki State Orchestras, the National Theatre of Greece, Orchestra of Colours, Armonia Atenea, and Ensemble Alraune. He has appeared in such theatres and concert halls as the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR) in Brussels, Theatre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, Vienna’s Musikverein, Munich’s Cuvilliéstheater (Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel), Sydney Recital Hall, Melbourne Recital Hall, the Salzburg Mozarteum, Vienna’s Karlskirche, the National Taichung Theater in Taiwan, as well as Megaron Athens and Thessaloniki Concert Halls. For the last several years, Spanos has been a regular collaborator of various early music ensembles, including Ex Silentio, Latinitas nostra, Ensemble 1756, and Pandolfis Consort Wien.
In November 2002, the Association of Theatre and Music Critics of Greece awarded him the title of ‘Best Young Artist of the Year’. In 2006, he was awarded first prize in the ‘TECHNI’ National Competition for Opera Singers (held in Thessaloniki). He participated in the CD recording of Handel’s Oreste and Tamerlano for the German label MDG, as well as a CD based on Metastasio's L’Olimpiade libretto with the Venice Baroque Orchestra for NAÏVE Records.
The singer will be accompanied by the Academy of Early Music Foundation Orchestra conducted by Paweł Osuchowski.
