Piano Recital by Sławomir Wilk

With a piano recital given on Saturday (20th January 2024) by Sławomir Wilk, we inaugurate a new cycle, titled CHOPIN AT THE LENTZ VILLA. COMPLETE WORKS.
During our evening recitals we are going to present, over the next two years, the complete solo piano works by the great master from Żelazowa Wola, in the interpretations of outstanding pianists applauded by audiences in the world’s prestigious concert halls. Our performers will include participants of the previous (18th) as well as the next (19th) International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. The latter will take place in October 2025, in the year of the composer’s 225th birth and 176th death anniversary.

The organisers at the Lentz Villa aim to attract audiences to what is undoubtedly Poland’s most cherished brand worldwide – the music of Fryderyk Chopin, and to familiarise listeners with the history of the unique event called the ‘Chopin Competition’ in short, which promotes the legacy of the great Polish master. This one of the world’s oldest, most prestigious and recognisable musical contests is held in Warsaw every five years. It is one of the few musical events of this type to feature, in all its stages, the works of one composer only – those of FRYDERYK CHOPIN.

The famous competition was initiated in 1927 by Polish pianist and educator, Prof. Jerzy Żurawlew. In 1957, the Chopin Competition became a founding member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions (along with such events as the Ferruccio Busoni Piano Competition in Bolzano, Queen Elisabeth IMC in Brussels, the Prague Spring, the Geneva International Music Competition, and the Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition in Poznań). At present, the Federation groups approximately 120 most prestigious music competitions worldwide.

Our two-year cycle at the Lentz Villa will be solemnly inaugurated with a Chopin recital by Sławomir Wilk.

Szczecin-born pianist Sławomir Wilk began to learn the piano with Helena Pachlowska, and later continued his education with Mikołaj Szczęsny. He graduated with honours from the Gdańsk Academy of Music (piano class of Prof. Waldemar Wojtal) and the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin (class of Prof. John O’Conor). He attended piano masterclasses conducted by D. Joffe, Y. Kaplinsky, V. Krainev, K. Kenner, V. Nosina, J. O’Conor, E. Pobłocka, B. Ringeissen, and others.

Wilk has received scholarships from the German federal government, the Polish Prime Minister, the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, and The Fryderyk Chopin Society (TIFC) in Warsaw. For his contributions to the promotion of Polish culture at home and abroad, he has received numerous prestigious accolades from, among others, the Society of the Friends of Art in Gdańsk, TU Allianz Poland (Nike award in the category of culture, science and media), as well as the President of the City of Szczecin (Artistic Award, 2003).

Wilk was a semi-finalist of the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (2005). He also scored high in the Hamamatsu (2006) and Dublin (2009) International Piano Competitions, as well as winning prizes at the Polish Piano Festival in Słupsk (the ‘Youth Stage’ series), the International Johannes Brahms Chamber Music Competition in Gdańsk (1st prize with Darius Piano Trio, 2006), and the International Johannes Brahms Competition in Pörtschach, Austria (3rd prize).

Considered as one of the leading Polish pianists of the middle generation, Wilk has given concerts and recitals worldwide (including in Africa, North America, Australia, Asia, and Europe). In 2010 he appeared at New York’s Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall as part of the International Chopin & Friends Festival. He has performed under such outstanding conductors as M. Diadiura, J.M. Florencio, J. Krenz, M. Nesterowicz, J. Przybylski, Z. Rychert, V. Syvokhip, and A. Wit.

Wilk has recorded widely for radio and television broadcasters as well as record labels. DUX released his recording of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s Double Concerto (with violinist Bartłomiej Nizioł) and an album of piano works by Sergei Bortkiewicz. With Tomasz Szczęsny he recorded the CD Karol Szymanowski – Works for Cello And Piano.
