Royber Trio: Film Music (M. Trzaska, O. Walicki, M. Moretti)

  • Willa Lentza

The trio under the working name of ROYBER was founded by Mikołaj Trzaska, Macio Moretti, and Olo Walicki, three musicians who met several years ago in the context of Łoskot band reactivation. They decided to perform and create new music as a trio, making their first public appearance at Elbląg’s Galeria El Arts Centre in October 2020. The trio’s members need not be specially introduced since they have been intensely hyperactive in Poland’s music scene for many years as pillars of, and pioneers in, their respective fields. They mainly perform Trzaska’s film music but have recently also presented the members’ joint composition interspersed with florid collective improvisation. At present they are compiling material for their debut album, which will feature their own works as well as music from films by Wojciech Smarzowski and other directors.
Mikołaj Trzaska – sax and bass clarinet player, film music composer who studied fine arts. His personality emerged from the social and artistic movement of yass, which rebelled against the ossification of Poland’s jazz scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Trzaska co-founded the legendary Miłość (the most important yass band) as well as Łoskot. Yass having lost its impetus many years ago, Trzaska went on to become a leading figure in Poland’s improvised music, recorded several focused, hushed albums with the Oleś brothers, accompanied poets (Świetlicki, Andrukhovych), and co-created musical-literary projects with Andrzej Stasiuk. At present he is the leader of Volumen international trio, member of, among others, Shofar band (performing Jewish music), but first and foremost – a proponent of radical free jazz, which he performs in collaboration with the world’s free improvisation stars such as Peter Brötzmann, Joe McPhee, and Ken Vandermark. He also regularly collaborates with film director Wojciech Smarzowski, for whom he wrote soundtracks for such titles as The Dark House, Rose, Volhynia, The Mighty Angel, and Clergy.

Macio Moretti – musician, graphic artist, film- and frame-maker, performing music continually since 1991. Over the last three decades he has played countless concerts throughout Europe and elsewhere, appeared at equally countless festivals at home and abroad, recorded countless albums with various Polish and foreign bands, designed countless album covers and posters, as well as winning a number of awards.

Olo Walicki – bassist, composer, and producer, founder of OW Kaszebe, The Saintbox, and Zespół Cieśni i Tańca bands. He plays improvised music as well as composing for the theatre and films. Associated with the Polish Tricity’s and Warsaw’s alternative art scene, he co-creates spectacles and projects for dance companies. He made his debut at age 16 in the avant-garde band Niebieski Lotnik (with Jerzy Mazzoll and Jacek Olter), co-created the yass music scene, and collaborated with its founders (Tymon Tymański, Mikołaj Trzaska, and Tomasz Gwinciński). For many years he was a member of Leszek Możdżer’s bands. In 1996-2004 Walicki performed and recorded with Zbigniew Namysłowski Quartet. He was a member of the free jazz band Łoskot, alternative pop band Szwagierkolaska, Oczi Cziorne and the late line-up of Miłość. Walicki features on several dozen albums representing various musical styles. He has also released several original projects under his own label, including Metalla Pretiosa and Olo Walicki Kaszëbë.
