Substratum

26.09 – 25.10.2025

In the expressive paintings of Australian artist Cameron Tauschke, vivid colors juxtaposed with monochromatic tones create tension and strong perceptual contrasts. Metaphorical narratives, references to pop culture, cinema, and contemporary visual reality intertwine with personal stories and global disruptions. Tauschke’s works also reflect on themes of identity, memory, and the potential to transcend personal limits.
The exhibition title is taken from the artist’s latest series. The word substratum comes from Latin and refers to that which lies beneath – a supporting layer, a foundation. In the context of this exhibition, it alludes to both the material and metaphorical foundations of human existence – the biological, psychological, and cultural structures that shape who we are and how we perceive the world.

In Tauschke’s paintings, the substratum reveals itself as a hidden web of meanings: organic forms – cells, organs, planets – interweave with architectural elements and cultural symbols. It is a world beneath the surface – pulsating, alive, and constantly evolving. His figures, though emerging from reality, resemble ghosts of stories, film stills, or dreams – suspended between experience and memory.

Tauschke does not depict the world as it is, but as it may appear in imagination, in emotional interpretation, in the subconscious. His substratum is a space full of tension – between corporeality and transcendence, between the real and the fantastical, between the individual and collective experience. At the Willa Lentza, where layers of history overlap like coats of paint, the exhibition title takes on additional meaning. The building itself becomes a physical substratum – a frame and stage for the paintings that explore what is hidden, forgotten, or disturbingly close.

Cameron Tauschke – born in 1971 in Melbourne, Australia; currently lives and works in Berlin. In 1992, he completed his painting studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), and in 2006 he earned a Visual Arts Education degree from the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne. Since then, he has actively exhibited his work in Europe, Australia, and North America.

He has been a finalist in awards such as the Prometheus Art Award and the Robert Jacks Drawing Prize, and was a recipient of a Berlin Senate & EU Culture Dept. grant (2020). His works are held in collections including: Barclays Bank (London), Monash University (Melbourne), Alice Salomon Institute (Berlin), and in private collections in Australia, Germany, the UK, and China.
