The 14th International Saxophone Festival at the Lentz Villa. Kenneth Tse (USA), Casey Dierlam Tse (USA), Iwona Grysak, Dorota Maciaszczyk, the Saxademus Quartet

The programme of the concert held at the Lentz Villa on Wednesday 17th May 2023 as part of the 14th International Saxophone Festival consists of compositions by Alfred Desdenclos (1912-1971), Lars Eric Larsson (1908-1986), David Maslanka (1943-2017), Robert Muczynski (1929-2010), and John Cheetham (b. 1939). Their music will be performed by: Kenneth Tse (alto saxophone), Casey Dirlam Tse (piano), Iwona Grysak (saxophone), Dorota Maciaszczyk (piano), and the Saxademus Quartet.

THE PERFORMERS

KENNETH TSE

Widely recognized as one of the world’s leading classical saxophonists, Kenneth Tse embarked on his career in 1996 as the winner of the prestigious New York Artists International Award, which resulted in an acclaimed debut recital at Carnegie Hall.

Tse has performed as a soloist with such excellent ensembles as, among others, the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, Des Moines Symphony, United States Navy Band, Slovenia Army Band, La Armónica Band of Bunol, Spain, Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, and Hong Kong Sinfonietta. He is a frequent featured artist at events such as the World Saxophone Congress, the conferences of North American Saxophone Alliance, California Band Directors’ Association, Iowa Bandmaster’s Association, and the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinics.

Prestigious universities and conservatories worldwide, such as the Sydney, Moscow. and Paris Conservatories have invited him to give master classes. He was also a juror at the Adolphe Sax International Competition in Dinant, Belgium.

His discography comprises twenty-three CDs released on Crystal Records, RIAX Records, Jeanné Records, Enharmonic Records, Arizona University Recordings, and MSR Classics.

Tse has premiered more than thirty works dedicated to him by leading contemporary composers such as David DeBoor Canfield, John Cheetham, Andrea Clearfield, David Froom, Perry Goldstein, Greg Fritze, Walter Hartley, Victoriano Valencia, Guy Lacour, Vincent David, Christian Lauba, Barry Cockcroft, and Piet Swerts.

His arrangements for the saxophone have been published by Reed Music, Australia, and his articles and interviews have been featured in the Saxophone Journal, The Instrumentalist, Fanfare Magazine, Saxophone Symposium, Iowa Bandmaster Association Journal, Japan’s Piper and The Sax Magazines, and Yamaha Education Series.

CASEY DIERLAM TSE

Casey received a BM from Indiana State University studying with William Hughes and an MM in piano from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign under the tutelage of Timothy Ehlen. She developed her abilities with the famous New-York-based pianist and pedagogue Zitta Zohar.

Highly praised for her successful collaborations with other musicians, this pianist and chamber musician has taken part in hundreds of recitals, projects, and recording sessions featuring artists from North America, Asia, and Europe. Her vast concert repertoire comprises more than 600 compositions. A gifted contemporary music performer, she collaborates with such up-and-coming young composers as Kevin Day, Josh Trentadue, Viet Cuong, Joel Love, and Karalyn Schubring, whose works she records and promotes. As a connoisseur and enthusiast of the saxophone repertoire, she has worked with highly acclaimed international artists, including Arno Bornkamp (The Netherlands), Claude Delangle (France), Asya Fateyeva (Germany), Jean-Yves Fourmeau (France), Paweł Gusnar (Poland), Branford Marsalis (USA), Gerard McChrystal (UK), Debra Richtmeyer (USA), and Nikita Zimin (Russia). Her regular collaborator and husband is the saxophone virtuoso Kenneth Tse.

Casey has taken part in such major music events as the World Saxophone Congress in Zagreb, Croatia, The Hong Kong Saxophone Symposium, the Asian Saxophone Congress in Shanghai, China, the Liceu Sax Festival in Barcelona, the Zurich Saxfest (Switzerland), and Lerici Music Festival (Italy). She is the collaborative piano coordinator for the North American Saxophone Alliance conference and has regularly been invited to take part in the United States Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium, the Single Reed Summit, MTNA competitions, as well as NASA conferences.

She is the winner of prestigious competition prizes, including Rose Petroff College Piano Competition, St. Louis Artist Presentation Society, New Orleans International Piano Competition, and the Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition.

IWONA GRYSAK

She graduated from Professor Dariusz Samól’s class at the Instrumental Department of Szczecin’s Academy of Art. Prize-winner in numerous music competitions and festivals, including the 29° Concorso Internazionale per Giovanni Musicisti ‘Città di Barletta’ (1st prize and award for the best saxophonist) and the 12th Concorso Internazionale Città di Filadelfia (1st prize in the solo category and the Grand Prix Paolo Serrao).

She has premiered numerous new works by Polish and foreign composers. She has participated in masterclasses taught by such world-famous artists as Patrick Meighan, Wildy Zumwalt (USA), Philippe Geiss, Jerome Laran, Nicolas Prost (France), Haans de Jong (The Netherlands), Paweł Gusnar, Magdalena Jakubska (Poland), and others.

Grysak has received scholarships from the President of the City of Szczecin and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

DOROTA MACIASZCZYK

Pianist and chamber musician, since 2020 – lecturer at the Chair of Piano and Organ of Szczecin’s Academy of Art, Instrumental Department.

She features on such CD albums as Artur Cieślak – Selected Works, Clarinet and New Polish Chamber Music, as well as Robert Muczynski in memoriam. The life and chamber music output of Robert Muczynski are the subject of her doctoral dissertation. Sha also discusses this composer’s musical language in her book The Clarinet Yesterday and Today: Theory Meets Practice (Poznań 2019).

As a chamber musician she has performed with such artists as, among others, Nicholas Cox, Guntis Kuzma, Antonio Saiote, Paweł Jakub Wojtasiewicz, and Kornel Wolak, as well as FeelHarmony Quintet. During chamber music concerts at the Philharmonic, she has recorded such works as Francis Poulenc’s Sextet for Wind Quintet and Piano and Jean Françaix’s Sextet.

SAXADEMUS QUARTET

A saxophone quartet consisting of students from Szczecin’s Academy of Art. Its members (Patrycjusz Pura – soprano saxophone, Blanka Król – alto saxophone, Rafał Pikusa – tenor saxophone, and Jianyu Feng – baritone saxophone) have already scored a number of artistic successes, including in numerous international competitions in Poland and abroad.
