Szymanowski at the Lentz Villa. Dwóchgłos / Duovoice

  • Willa Lentza

On Friday 8th March 2024 at 7 p.m., the DWÓCHGŁOS (DUOVOICE) duo (Michał Pepol – cello and Bartek Wąsik – piano) will play a concert at the Lentz Villa.
The programme consists of pieces in different genres written by Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937), an artist listed along with Fryderyk Chopin as one of Poland’s greatest composers of all time.

One of the fresh and possibly surprising aspects of this concert is that Szymanowski’s works will be presented in new arrangements for piano and cello. The programme includes such repertoire staples as ‘Roxana’s Song’ from the opera King Roger, Kurpie Songs, Mazurkas, the famous Swan, as well as excerpts from the ballet Harnasie.

Participants will also have an opportunity to see Joanna Sarapata’s work ART DECO GOLD.

Please join us for this concert.

Pepol’s projects include The Sound Regained (a collaboration with Paweł Bownik), The Silence of the Sirens (duo with Magdalena Cielecka), Among Angels (recorded on video in Biała Forest), as well as music for spectacles by Markus Öhrn (3 Episodes of Life, 2021), Krzysztof Warlikowski (The Frenchmen), the sound installation We’re Standing by the Ghetto Wall (featuring Sława Przybylska), and guest performances on Ralph Kamiński’s album Kora (Fryderyk Award, 2021).

With Trimagine trio, Pepol won the 2nd prize and Czesław Niemen Special Award in the ‘New Tradition’ Polish Radio Folk Music Competition (in recognition of his extraordinary arrangements). He has given performances with Natalia Przybysz, Kuba Krzewiński, Stefan Wesołowski, Patryk Zakrocki, Olga Mysłowska, and Kompopolex ensemble. His festival appearances include the Warsaw Autumn, Nostalgia, Ephemera, Pomada, Enter, Słuchy, EtnoKraków/Crossroads, Tranströmer Days, La Folle Journée, and the Festival of Premieres – Polish Modern Music.

BARTEK WĄSIK

A leading, versatile Polish pianist, as well as arranger and composer. His accolades include numerous prizes in international competitions as well as such awards as the Polityka’s ‘Passport’, the Fryderyk, Coryphaeus of Polish Music (award of the Polish music circles, as Personality of the Year 2020). Wąsik has given performances in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. At Carnegie Hall and Chicago Symphony Hall, he presented his own arrangements of works by Fryderyk Chopin. At Berlin Philharmonic (with Kwadrofonik), he played his original version of Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and pieces from the CD Folklove (Folk Album of the Year). His project New Warsaw (twelve new arrangements of songs about Warsaw, with Stanisława Celińska and the Royal String Quartet) met with an enthusiastic critical acclaim and won the Guarantee of Culture as well as Wdecha awards.

Wąsik’s collaborations include the film New Warsaw (with Bartosz Konopka), the spectacle Xenophonia.
