The vernissage of the exhibition EVENT HORIZON will be held on Thursday 1st June 2023 at 6 p.m. in the Lentz Villa.
Kacper Kowalski took the presented photographs while flying a gyrocopter. ‘I pilot with precision and control the image,’ he says. ‘[…] I like the sense of physical fatigue, the emotions, engine vibrations, smell of air and the wind on my face. I must see with my own eyes what I wish to convey. It is only then that I put my eye to the camera and press the shutter. […] The air continues to attract me, and I still wander across the skies. I am more interested in what I feel while watching than in what I see and know about the world. I look for the impression that stays in my imagination while I am no longer watching the scene. This is my ritual. I enter a state of meditation or perhaps mindfulness. Then I take the photographs.’
You will be able to learn more about details of the photographic technique from the Author himself at the exhibition’s opening. Please come to the vernissage!
Entry is free of charge.
Graduate of the Gdańsk University of Technology, he has dedicated himself to his greatest passions: flying and photography. He has spent more than 5000 hours in the air. As a paraglider, PPG and gyrocopter pilot, he has taken to the air with an engine strapped to his back in order to discover forms, shapes, and patterns during his lonely flights. To Kowalski, flying is not only a chance to capture the world beneath, but also a spiritual journey, during which he discovers universal truths concerning humans and nature, the past and the present, as well as his own personal truth and way that leads to it.
The artist’s numerous accolades include the World Press Photo awards (thrice) and Picture of the Year International POYI (six times). His first book, Side Effects, was published in 2014 by Leica Gallery Warszawa. There followed self-published OVER (2017) and Arché (2021). The book Event Horizon (publ. by 1605 Collective in the Netherlands) came out in 2022. His works have been exhibited several hundred times at collective and solo exhibitions all over the world, and have won or been nominated to prestigious prizes, including Les Prix du Livre at the Rencontres d’Arles.
