Freedom in culture

On Saturday evening, August 28, 2021, as part of the second edition of the Values in Culture series, FREEDOM was the main topic. The host was Andrzej Łazowski, president of the Czas Przestrzeń Tożsamość Association; an artist-photographer took on the role of the host. |He invited participants to the debate on behalf of the cultural institution, the Lentz Villa.
The meeting was attended by Grzegorz Czarnecki, Agnieszka Kuchcińska-Kurcz, Kalina Kukiełko-Rogozińska, Krystyna Maksymowicz, Radosław Nagay, Patryk Słowiński, Monika Szymanik and Krzysztof Żurawski. The participants discussed freedom in culture, especially from the perspective of the creative process and their experiences in which they are involved.

Agnieszka Kuchcińska-Kurcz presented her experience in passing knowledge about freedom to young people, using the knowledge of witnesses of history who survived the times of enslavement during totalitarian years, communism and fascism. Only those who have just experienced enslavement can authentically convey their impressions, feelings and suffering to those who have never experienced this pain.

As a counterbalance to these considerations, the well-known actress of the Współczesny Theater, Krystyna Maksymowicz, lecturer at the Academy of Art in Szczecin, presented her thoughts. She talked about cooperation with people with disabilities, especially the visually impaired and the blind, with whom she conducts theatrical and recitation workshops. She also emphasised her experience in breaking barriers in the creativity of young people because she recognised that each of us has walls in our heads.

Similar rhetoric was presented by Radosław Nagay, PhD, also from the Academy of Arts, who confirmed that young people shape their reality by creating blockades. What can change such a situation is usually bold, creative thought and the transfer of specific knowledge about finding yourself in the free market in a free profession.

Grzegorz Czarnecki, invited because he is a freelancer, presented his vision of enjoying freedom by extracting energy from urban space and landscape. The greatest freedom for him is to use the river.

Similar impressions about freedom were presented by Patryk Słowiński, who confirmed that he feels free when he lives by the river.

One of the more difficult breakthroughs experienced by the scientist and sociologist Kalina Kukiełko-Rogozińska was the pandemic. Being enslaved, she had to work and maintain contact with students only via the Internet. She confirmed that freedom on the Internet exists, and it is a matter of exercising it skillfully.

Freedom for Monika Szymanik is the eternal interpersonal contacts, exchanging thoughts, and being inspired by other people.

Krzysztof Żurawski, a poet, told about his many experiences, pointing to the essential idea of the evening – you shouldn't look for freedom in museums and virtual space: freedom is here and now – he concluded.

Saturday ended with the excellent music presented by Tropiki.
