Our exhibition, dedicated to the highly regarded painter and graphic artist Andrzej Maciejewski, is a unique opportunity to see many of his symbol-imbued works.
Exhibition of Works by Andrzej Maciejewski
According to the exhibition’s curator Jolanta Szczepańska-Andrzejewska, ‘many have classified Andrzej’s art as computer graphics, but this is not quite accurate. His practice is much more complex and closer to classical graphic techniques. The computer is merely one of his tools.’
A frequently awarded Szczecin-based painter and graphic artist, Andrzej Maciejewski has been active in the art scene for 60 years now. His works are well known to inhabitants of Szczecin and its neighbourhood; some have become part and parcel of the city’s landscape. Already in the 1970s he designed and created numerous large-format murals promoting local companies on buildings in the city centre, for instance in Wojska Polskiego, Getta Warszawskiego, and Dworcowa streets, as well as near the Harbour Gate.
‘Finding one’s own place in digital techniques is extremely difficult. One needs to test them and turn them into a tool of creative work. In Andrzej’s case this is particularly relevant since they were not always there. They are, historically speaking, the most recent episode in the history of graphic techniques. To Andrzej, they have proved a revelation, and, as we know, he never lets himself get bored,’ writes painter Waldemar J. Marszałek. He also admits that Maciejewski’s paintings appeal to him in a way that is different from any other works in many long years. In order to be a painter and artist in the digital world, one needs to be something more than an exceptionally sensitive person; one has to become a superman of the art scene.
Maciejewski’s works are highly topical, rooted in the present day and current topics, frequently referring to the Szczecin landscape. They have been presented at collective and individual exhibitions in Polish galleries and institutions of culture as well as abroad in, among others, Japan, Sweden, Germany, Austria, Ukraine, Denmark, and Russia.
