Polonaise & Villa

The POLONAISE was the leitmotif of last Saturday’s (5th November) events at the Lentz Villa. This noble dance ideally suits the context of the villa’s elegant historical interiors.
The numerous dance lovers flocking to our institution of culture had many attractions to choose from. One pleasant surprise, greeted with much sentiment and nostalgia, awaited them in the villa’s garden: a 1979 FSO Polonez 1500 passenger car, made available by the Szczecin Museum of Technology and Transport.

Andrzej Wajda’s film adaptation of the Polish national epic Pan Tadeusz: The Last Foray in Lithuania with music by Wojciech Kilar was screened at the Villa early in the afternoon. The history of our national dance, its origins and place in culture, were presented by Romana Agnel, PhD, founder of Poland’s only professional Court Ballet ‘Cracovia Danza’. This Paris-Sorbonne graduate is a dancer, choreographer, teacher, and art historian. Her lecture provided a perfect introduction to the panel discussion on the polonaise, whose participants included:
  • Katarzyna Dondalska, an outstanding soprano, winner and finalist of international vocal competitions, applauded in the world’s prestigious opera houses,
  • Ewa Ott-Kamińska, director of ‘Szczecinianie’ Song-and-Dance Ensemble, CIOFF Commissioner for the Region of Western Pomerania (CIOFF is the world’s largest international organisation working in the field of folk arts and global cultural heritage),
  • Mirosław Kosiński, singer, actor, and teacher, appearing in leading roles in operas by, among others, S. Moniuszko, G. Puccini, G. Verdi, G. Bizet, and J. Strauss,
  • Tomasz Raczek, film critic and feature writer on culture, author of TV and radio broadcasts, editor at ‘Latarnik’ Zygmunt Kałużyński Publishing Institute, recipient of the Victor Prize (1986) and awards for artistic criticism,
  • Tomasz Tomaszewski, violinist, soloist and chamber musician, conductor, Deutsche Oper Berlin concertmaster, Professor of the Universität der Künste Berlin, twice winner of ‘Fryderyk’ Awards of the Polish music record industry.

The discussion was followed by a concert of Berlin Opera’s Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Tomasz Tomaszewski, which delighted the audience with its excellent interpretations of famous polonaises by J.S. Bach, G.Ph. Telemann, F. Schubert, L. van Beethoven, as well as Polish composers: F. Chopin, W. Kilar, Z. Noskowski, M. K. Ogiński, and H. Wieniawski.

The audience also greeted with a long ovation the performance by Court Ballet ‘Cracovia Danza’, who presented masterful choreographies to polonaises by M. Radziwiłł, M.K. Ogiński, and J. L. Eybler: ‘In the Polish Gentry’s Vein’, ‘Farewell to the Fatherland’, and ‘On the Uhlan Note’.

There was also an opportunity to savour Polish delicacies and dance the final polonaise, in which ‘Cracovia Danza’ ballet and the amused visitors joined forces, led to this dance by our event’s special guest, actor-choreographer Arkadiusz Buszko.

Honorary patronage over the event was assumed by Piotr Krzystek – President of the City of Szczecin and Olgierd Geblewicz – Marshal of the Western Pomeranian Province. Media patrons were Radio Szczecin, TVP Kultura, and ‘MM Trendy’ magazine.

The event’s host was Tomasz Raczek. We would like to thank the Artists and our Audience for participation and warmly invite you to the coming events at the Lentz Villa.
